Today

Can you even imagine today? Yesterday you watched in horror as your mentor, your friend, your teacher, your leader, the one who was going to save the World, was beaten unrecognizeable, mocked by crowds, nailed to a cross and put on display between two horrible criminals. He himself replaced the worst of the criminals as the crowds requested and you just stood there, silently watching as life slipped away. How do you process all of this? How can all the things He taught you be true? And on top of the immense grief and sorrow, you are ashamed, because out of fear, you did absolutely nothing to counteract this horrible event, you were complacent and just as guilty as the crowds shouting for his death. Maybe you even shouted a little so people wouldn’t think you were his follower and kill you too. Today, it all sets in. The reality of His death and the questions about His life. You are confused and scared and feel so alone. You do not understand that tomorrow will be different. Tomorrow holds a new beginning. Tomorrow the tomb will be empty as He promised, but right now, you don’t even register that promise. Today is a day of pain and hurt and sorrow. But tomorrow…just you wait until tomorrow!

So often we get caught up in our today and we forget about the promises of tomorrow. Or maybe we don’t truly understand them and therefore explain them away to mean something entirely different than God intended. But we should always remember tomorrow is coming. Without the cross of yesterday, and without the loneliness and hurt of today, the victorious empty tomb of tomorrow would be just another day. May you hold tight to the promise of tomorrow, even in the midst of your today.
